In the first year of my development for my business I will need to attend events realted to my disapline to build social capital and network.
“Networking is about making connections and building enduring, mutually beneficial relationships.”
“NETWORKING is the single most powerful marketing tactic to accelerate and sustain success for any individual or organization!” – Adam Small
It can lead to finding sponsors, team players, advances, help and so much more. Despite the desperation for independance as we grow it is actually the people around us who will help us the most when we need it. It has become “who you know” not “what you know” in todays day and age.
For example the majority of large organisations will recuit internally before externally. So having your toe dipped in many communities and in peoples lives may seem useless at the beginning but one day their knowlegde or expertise may be incredibly useful for your development.
It also allows you to create a word of mouth for you and your buisness at these events. Social media can be an incredible tool for this but sometimes the old fashion way works best.
A few events I will be attending are:
- The Business Show
- 3 Beards
- Small Business Saturday
- Creative England
- Birmingham Business Events & Networking (Birmingham UK)
The Business Show 2017
Date: 17th/18th April
Location: London Olympia
Cost: £2610 +VAT
“Exhibiting is one of the most efficient, effective and successful marketing activities available to you. Having a presence at The Business Show will give you exposure to an audience of over 25,000 aspiring, developing and expanding companies and the opportunity to sell your products and services to these highly targeted visitors on a face to face basis.”
I spoke to Nick Woore, who is the Event Director and managed to get a few quote prices for the weekend. The smallest space I could have would cost me £2610 for the weekend. I think this will be out of my budget for the first year atleast but may be something to consider in the future.
“3beards is an events company that exists to grow and support the global startup community that is at the heart of everything we do.
Our events enable people to network, learn and share ideas in lively, stimulating and social environments. We champion those who pay it forward and abhor douchebaggery.”
What is great about this community is that you can not only attend their own events but you can set up your own too for that community to come to! As the closest one for me already set up in London I could potentioaly set up one more local to build a buzz around the area and my project.
The events cost nothing to attend which is great unlike the Business Show but will attract a much smaller audience.
Small Buisness Saturday UK
What is Small Business Saturday?
“Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities.
The day itself takes place on the first Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses. In 2016 Small Business Saturday took take place on Saturday, December 3rd.”
How the UK supported Small Business Saturday 2015:
- “Customers spent £623m with small businesses on Small Business Saturday, an increase of £119m or 24% on 2014
- #SmallBizSatUK trended at number 1 all day on Small Business Saturday with over 100,000 tweets sent in support of the day, reaching more than 25 million people
- Over 75% of local councils actively supported the campaign, delivering on the ground activities including free parking, Christmas fairs and small business networking events plus much much more”-
They host events locally which I can attend throughout the year for free in their “Inspire series” page. These workshops would be great for myself and the business to learn from and network with other small businesses.
If we get a good relationship with the small business saturday team we could potentialy cross promote at their events and through our own site. Dedicate a video to promoting them etc.
They also host events throughout the year for the small businesses to come together and sell their products and services. At the moment no dates are set.
